Making a stationary bike out of a regular bike [Sep. 10th, 2009|01:41 pm]

Using something like this:  http://www.amazon.com/Bell-Motivator-Indoor-Bicycle-Trainer/dp/B000AAYBWS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1252604570&sr=8-1

Anyone (Jenny?) familiar with using these kinds of things and can offer a personal review?

What's your favorite time of day to work out? [Mar. 20th, 2009|10:30 pm]

Curious to hear about other peoples' preferences.  I detest mornings and would much rather hit the gym in the evening, but A) it's way more crowded then, and B) I seem to end up running late for everything if I work out in the evening.

I'm trying to get on a schedule of hitting the gym briefly before work, and it's slowly getting more bearable.  Several coworkers hit the company gym around lunchtime (people tend to stagger their workout times since it's a small gym room) but I think I'd have problems getting back to the daily grind if I did that.

So, what do you all like to do?

I saw this in my firm's weekly newsletter. Even though I consider some of this information to fall in the "no brainer" category, I still thought it had some good tips to pass along.

Study Finds High-Fructose Corn Syrup Contains Mercury

"The bad news is that nobody knows whether or not their soda or snack food contains HFCS made from ingredients like caustic soda contaminated with mercury. The good news is that mercury-free HFCS ingredients exist."

weight loss is easier if you get paid for it

an interesting article - but the line at the end tells the true tale: [...]the studies were highly effective at producing short-term weight loss, but when the money stopped flowing, the weight began to creep back on.

it needs to be a forever-change, not a quick-fix.

but still, that's impressive! 16lbs in 4 months, definitely doable. the difference between the gettin' paid and the gettin' better fittin' jeans groups is pretty dramatic.

food for thought I suppose.

I wonder if this could be utilized at home... ie: if you're on WW, every time you go don't have to use any of the 35 extra points for the week on a day, you put some money in a jar. at the end of the week (or month) - you get that money to use as you wish. (that way it is positive reinforcement, vs. every time you eat more than your allotment for the day - or week - making a deposit...)...

HMMM...

Go a Little Nuts at Holiday Parties This Year

Whether you’re a health nut or just a nut lover, you've probably heard that these hard-shelled seeds help keep your weight and cholesterol down, cancer at bay, and your heart, well, hardy. But do you know your filberts from your macadamias, your walnuts from your almonds -- health wise, that is? Just in time for all those nut bowls and party platters, here are the specific benefits of each. Think small handfuls, though, not mindless munching. As nutritious as they are, nuts pack 160 to 200 calories per ounce!

on the to rest of the article!Collapse )

I thought this might be of interest to some folks on here. at least it'll help you justify eating the nuts - and mebbe help you portion things out (cuz you'll be thinking "okay, I've had 10 macademia nuts - that's all I need of those!" - right?)... I know I will be crackin' open walnuts, brazil nuts, and hazelnuts around the fireplace for the holidays. mm mm mmmm!

The latest workplace idea [Nov. 20th, 2008|02:12 pm]

As part of the Wellness Fair going on this afternoon, HR is tallying up interest in the idea of a "Healthy Fare Fridge".  Evidently, it would get stocked on a regular basis with fruits and...possibly low-fat cheese, salad mixes and the like, I suppose...and employees can then buy those items from the fridge.

I have to admit I didn't spend much time listening to the description of the plan because I have a mini-fridge in my cube - if I want to have something healthy waiting for me, I can bring it in myself.  Most of the people I've heard express interest are the ones who already bring in fairly healthy meals and use the communal fridge to store them, so I really don't understand the attraction.  I figured I'd spread the word a bit though, in case it inspired people in other offices.

WOOHOO! [Sep. 22nd, 2008|04:31 pm]

I had been at a plateau with my weight for what felt like forever (in reality, it has only been 3-4 months, but still). It seemed like nothing would get that figure to budge. I am happy to announce that the number on the scale finally dropped two weekends ago.

Friends and coworkers would comment on how it looked like I had lost weight during that time, but the number on the scale never moved. I know I shouldn't have focused so much on that number, and should have concentrated on the other things - how my clothes fit, my measurements, and the like. Realistically, I knew that I was also gaining muscle mass (have you seen the pic cayusa took of me at DragonCon), but I guess I do have a "goal" weight that I would like to reach one day.

As of this past weekend, I'm three pounds closer to that.
